You may have read about terpenes in CBD and wondered, “Exactly what are terpenes?” Terpenes provide the unique scents that plants have. More importantly, terpenes provide the medicinal qualities found in plants. So, terpenes determine the effects that the plant-based wonder has on consumers.

All plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs, including cannabis, contain terpenes. While the plant is growing, terpenes protect it from pests and fungi. In humans, in combination with CBD, terpenes bind to neurotransmitters and receptors in the brain. Terpenes have differing effects

– some are energizing, while others are relaxing.

Terpenes, in combination with CBD, provide the “entourage effect,” meaning that they act in a synergetic fashion, each increasing the effects of the other. Full spectrum CBD oil contains numerous terpenes. The proportion of various terpenes varies by the cannabis strain and the method used to extract the them.

There are about 10 terpenes commonly found. Popular terpenes include limonene which has a citrus fragrance and is used to calm anxiety; linalool which has a flowery fragrance and is used for pain relief, depression, insomnia and anxiety; and myrcene with a spicy fragrance used for its sedating and relaxing properties. By employing care, consumers can add selected terpenes to their CBD oil. Just as essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil, these terpenes must be diluted in CBD oil. Terpenes can be purchased online and a few drops added to the CBD oil. The companies selling terpenes provide useful guides to their use.
